As the war that has unsettled the world continues on its fifth day, a large-scale cyber attack was carried out against Bank Sepah, one of Iran's oldest banks. While the ATM systems in the country collapsed, a hacker group called Predatory Sparrow claimed to have deleted all data. The Central Bank of Iran issued a statement saying that "everything is fine."
As the war continues with all its intensity on the 5th day, Iran was shaken today by a critical attack. Bank Sepah, one of Iran's oldest financial institutions known for its closeness to the Iranian army and the Revolutionary Guards, became the target of a major cyber attack.
"WE HAVE DESTROYED ALL THE BANK'S DATA"
The attack was claimed by a hacker group called Predatory Sparrow, which has previously targeted Iran's steel facilities and fuel infrastructure. The group announced via social media that they had destroyed all the bank's data. This statement coincided with widespread disruptions in the banking system across Iran.
ATM MACHINES ARE OUT OF SERVICE
Following the large-scale cyber attack on Bank Sepah, ATM machines across the country went out of service. Customers speaking to Iran International reported that they could not access their accounts at Bank Sepah, and some branches were completely closed.
CENTRAL BANK: SYSTEMS ARE WORKING PROPERLY
Bank Sepah has more than 1,800 branches in Iran. The bank also has branches in the UK, France, Germany, and Italy. A spokesperson for the Central Bank, speaking to the state agency IRNA, stated, "All banking systems are functioning properly and serving customers."
NO OFFICIAL STATEMENT HAS BEEN MADE YET
While no official statement has been made by Iranian authorities yet, the Predatory Sparrow hacker group announced that they targeted the bank because it allegedly finances Iran's nuclear and missile programs. The group claimed that Bank Sepah was used to circumvent international sanctions and finance military projects.
