Denmark prepares to ban the call to prayer

27.06.2026 11:55

Denmark's Immigration Minister Morten Bodskov announced that the government will restart its assessment of whether the call to prayer can be legally banned nationwide. Bodskov stated, "The call to prayer should not be heard over Danish rooftops. When walking around in Denmark, you should not be in doubt whether you have found yourself in a suburb of Islamabad."

In the Scandinavian country of Denmark, the ban on the call to prayer (adhan) has once again come to the agenda.

“YOU SHOULD NOT DOUBT WHETHER YOU FIND YOURSELF IN A SUBURB OF ISLAMABAD”

Denmark's Immigration Minister Morten Bodskov stated in a statement to the news agency Ritzau that the government will restart the assessment of the legal feasibility of banning the call to prayer.

Arguing that the adhan has no place in Denmark, Bodskov said, “The call to prayer should not be heard over Danish rooftops. While walking around Denmark, you should not doubt whether you find yourself in a suburb of Islamabad.” Bodskov also claimed that the increasing “Islamization” is occupying the public space excessively.

IT WAS ALSO ON THE AGENDA IN 2020 AND 2025

This is the third attempt to create a legal framework to ban the adhan in the country. The ban on the call to prayer in Denmark was also brought to the agenda by Social Democratic governments in 2020 and 2025.

MAY FACE LEGAL CHALLENGES

The attempt to impose a nationwide ban on the adhan in Denmark is likely to face significant legal obstacles. The Danish constitution guarantees the right to practice religion publicly.

There are approximately 270,000 Muslims living in Denmark, which has a population of about 6 million. There are around 100 mosques in the country.
