Behind the Deportivo fans unfurling giant Turkish flags at the Riazor Stadium, where they play their home matches, lies a story dating back hundreds of years with their eternal rivals Celta Vigo. In the 16th century, when the Ottoman Empire dominated the Mediterranean and Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha reached as far as the Galicia region, the people of La Coruna supported the Ottoman sailors. Unable to accept this, the people of the neighboring city (Vigo residents) accused the La Coruna residents of treason and gave them the nickname "Turcos" (Turks) as an insult. In response, the La Coruna people called the Vigo residents "Portuguese" due to their proximity to Portugal.
In this rivalry, carried into football centuries later, Celta Vigo fans continue to shout "Turks" to anger Deportivo supporters. However, Deportivo fans do not see this nickname as an insult; on the contrary, they embrace it with great pride.
