In the headscarf crisis that began after the change to the dress code in schools in Azerbaijan, 37 people were detained, while access to TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook was restricted following protests reminiscent of the February 28 period in Turkey.

The headscarf debates that began in Azerbaijan after the government changed dress codes in schools are growing. In protests against the exclusion of headscarved students from schools, 37 people were detained, while some teachers were also reported to have been suspended from duty.

The new regulation made by the government in school dress codes in Azerbaijan has led to widespread debate and protests across the country. After headscarved students were not allowed to enter school buildings under the new rules, parents and students took to the streets.

37 PEOPLE DETAINED

Groups gathered in front of schools in various cities and regions of the country, especially the capital Baku, held demonstrations with the slogan “Freedom for the headscarf.” In footage reflected on social media, some students who were not admitted to schools were seen sitting on the ground in front of school buildings studying. During the demonstrations, in which security forces responded harshly to protesters, it was reported that 37 people have been detained so far. Meanwhile, it was noted that some teachers who refused to remove their headscarves were also removed from their duties.

SOCIAL MEDIA ACCESS BLOCKED

After protest news and footage of demonstrations in front of schools spread rapidly on social media, the Baku administration imposed restrictions on digital platforms. Access to TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook platforms was restricted across Azerbaijan.

IT BROUGHT FEBRUARY 28 TO MIND

The harsh attitude of the security forces and the scenes that unfolded brought to mind the similar headscarf bans and protests experienced during the February 28 period in Turkey. The tension in the region and the judicial process are being followed.
