After the ferry, which was on the Girne-Taşucu route and carrying 267 people, took on water and sank, footage has emerged of the terrifying moments experienced on the same ferry a few days earlier. While passengers were seen screaming as the ferry rocked like a cradle due to violent waves, one passenger shared the footage with the note, “The worst journey I've ever had.”
Off the coast of Girne, in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), a passenger ferry traveling from Girne to Taşucu began taking on water for an undetermined reason. Following the captain's distress call, coast guard, port authority teams, and civilian boats were dispatched to the area.
267 PEOPLE ON BOARD
The ferry, which departed from Girne Port around 12:30, was reported to have 259 passengers and 8 crew members, totaling 267 people on board. Shortly after taking on water, the ferry capsized. Witnesses reported that some passengers jumped into the sea after the ship began taking on water.
7 PEOPLE DIED, 23 MISSING
TRNC Prime Minister Ünal Üstel announced that 7 people lost their lives in the accident, while 172 people were rescued. Search and rescue efforts were reported to be ongoing to find the 23 missing passengers and crew members.
THEY EXPERIENCED TERROR ON THE SAME SHIP A FEW DAYS AGO
Meanwhile, footage recorded by a passenger who was on the same ferry during the same Girne-Taşucu voyage a few days earlier has emerged.
In the footage, shared on the passenger's social media account with the note "The worst journey I've ever had," the ferry can be seen violently rocking due to the waves.
During the moments when passengers were in great panic, screams were also captured on the mobile phone camera.
