An unmanned aerial vehicle that entered Bulgaria from Romanian airspace without permission fell into a sunflower field near the border village of Kardam and exploded. The incident, which occurred right next to the Trans-Balkan natural gas pipeline, has reignited strategic security concerns in the region. In a statement following the event, Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev announced that there were no casualties or infrastructure damage but noted that security measures would be increased.
There were tense moments on the Bulgaria-Romania border. An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that entered Bulgaria from Romanian airspace crashed and exploded in a sunflower field near the village of Kardam shortly after crossing the border. The fact that the explosion occurred very close to the compressor stations of the Trans-Balkan natural gas pipeline, which extends from Turkey to Ukraine, raised the security alert to the highest level.
STRATEGIC FACILITY EXPLODED A FEW HUNDRED METERS AWAY
Following the incident, Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev, who made a statement, announced that no loss of life or infrastructure damage occurred as a result of the explosion of the UAV, which violated the airspace at 08:10 local time. However, it was learned that the explosion area was at an extremely critical point. It was reported that the sunflower field where the UAV crashed was only 1,000 meters from the compressor station of the Trans-Balkan natural gas pipeline in Bulgaria, and only 200 meters from the station in Romania.
"THERE ARE DELAYS IN RADAR DELIVERIES, MEASURES WILL BE INCREASED"
Prime Minister Radev, stating that the region has been cordoned off for security and that the type of UAV will be clarified after the examination of the wreckage, drew attention to the fact that the vehicle could not be detected by radar systems during the crossing. Emphasizing that this situation once again proved the global difficulties in identifying UAVs flying at low altitudes or with low radar signatures, Radev mentioned the delays in the delivery of high-precision radars to the Bulgarian army and promised to act quickly to solve the problem.
Following the incident, it was announced that surveillance activities on the Bulgaria-Romania border have been tightened and that security measures around strategic facilities in the country have been raised to the maximum level.
