The death toll from the 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck the South American country of Colombia yesterday has risen to 132.
The Association of Capital Cities of Colombia (Asocapitales) made a statement regarding the latest situation after the 7.4-magnitude earthquake that hit the country.
MORE THAN 700 INJURED
In the statement, the number of deaths in the earthquake rose to 132, while more than 700 people were injured.
According to the national press, a red alert was declared in Pereira, Cali, Quibdo, Manizales, and Armenia, where the greatest loss of life and property occurred in the earthquake, and a curfew was imposed in these cities for security reasons.
Among the cities where search and rescue efforts continue unabated, the highest loss of life occurred in Pereira, where 60 people lost their lives.
FEARS OF RISING DEATH TOLL
According to the press, missing person reports have been filed for 188 people, and there are concerns that the death toll could rise further.
In Cali, the country's third-largest city, it was reported that some roads collapsed due to the earthquake and 10 hospitals were unable to provide services, while search and rescue teams from the capital Bogota and Medellin were dispatched to the region for support.
In Quibdo and Manizales, the earthquake caused disruptions in water, electricity, telecommunications, and transportation services.
CURFEW DECLARED IN CALI
Cali Mayor Alejandro Eder said in a statement to the press that a curfew had been declared to prevent security issues and looting, and that the decision was made to enable emergency and rescue teams to carry out their work more safely and quickly.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) had announced that a 7.4-magnitude earthquake occurred with its epicenter approximately 5 kilometers east of the town of San Jose del Palmar in western Colombia.
FELT IN VENEZUELA, ECUADOR, AND PANAMA
The earthquake was felt not only in Colombia but also in various regions of Venezuela, Ecuador, and Panama.
According to the news from the Venezuela-based Telesur website, due to the earthquake in Colombia, the facades of some buildings in Venezuela partially collapsed, and a cathedral and an airport were damaged.
