Nigeria has long been facing attacks from armed gangs as well as terrorist organizations Boko Haram and the West African branch of ISIS, ISWAP, in various regions of the country. Although the penalty for kidnapping in the country is death, incidents of abduction for ransom are frequently encountered. Armed individuals typically target villages, schools, and travelers in the northern part of the country, demanding ransom.
