Snake Island, with its lush green appearance off the coast of Brazil resembling paradise, is closed to humans due to the deadly risk it carries. The region, home to the venomous golden lancehead vipers that live only on this island in the world, is known as a frequent spot for thousands of snakes as well as smugglers engaged in illegal snake trade.
Queimada Grande Island, known as Snake Island off the coast of Brazil, may look like a tropical paradise from a distance, but it is known as one of the most terrifying places on Earth. Located about 33 kilometers off the coast of São Paulo, the island is completely closed to civilian access due to the golden lancehead vipers that live only there. The island, home to thousands of venomous snakes, is also a target for smugglers seeking this rare species, which fetches high prices on the black market.
BROKE OFF FROM THE MAINLAND 11 THOUSAND YEARS AGO
Covering an area of about 43 hectares in the Atlantic Ocean, the island separated from the Brazilian mainland about 11 thousand years ago due to rising sea levels. This isolation paved the way for the emergence of the golden lancehead viper, scientifically known as Bothrops insularis, which lives nowhere else in the world.
Civilians are not allowed to enter the island to protect the critically endangered species and prevent possible human-snake encounters. Only scientists and military personnel with the necessary permits can enter the region.
THE LEGEND OF "ONE SNAKE PER SQUARE METER"
One of the most famous stories told about Snake Island for years is the claim that there is one snake per square meter on the island.
However, field studies have revealed that this narrative does not fully reflect the truth. The snake population on the island is estimated to be between approximately 2,000 and 4,000. This number, when compared to the island's surface area, shows that there is more than 100 square meters of space for each snake.
Golden lancehead vipers, usually shorter than 1 meter, feed especially on birds migrating to the island.
THE PRICE OF ONE SNAKE CAN REACH 30 THOUSAND DOLLARS
Another important reason for the island's isolation from humans is that the rare snake species living there attracts the attention of smugglers.
The golden lancehead viper, naturally found only on Snake Island in the world, fetches high prices in the illegal exotic animal trade. It is stated that the black market value of one snake can reach up to 30 thousand dollars.
Therefore, smugglers trying to enter the island illegally are seen as one of the most important threats by the authorities in the region.
THE REAL FACE OF THE LIGHTHOUSE LEGEND
Among the stories told about Snake Island, there is also the claim that people working at the lighthouse lost their lives due to snake attacks.
However, there is no confirmed record of human death supporting this story. It is known that the real reason the human presence at the lighthouse ended was the automation of the lighthouse in 1920.
ENTERED THE ISLAND WITH SPECIAL ARMOR
British YouTuber Miles Routledge brought the region back to the agenda by sharing footage showing him illegally entering the island where entry is forbidden.
Routledge, who said he escaped from Brazilian coast guard teams and used special armor to protect his body, made his way across the island and filmed.
In the footage of the YouTuber saying, "I am on one of the most dangerous islands in the world," it was noteworthy that despite moving along the coast, he did not encounter as many snakes as he expected.
