Experienced mountaineer and dentist Antonia Mihailescu died in Romania after falling approximately 12 meters onto a rocky area due to equipment failure during a climb. Three people attached to the same safety system were rescued with injuries.
SAFETY ANCHOR BROKE
The accident occurred on July 11 on the Albișoara Brânei route in Romania's Bucegi Mountains. A four-person group, including Antonia Mihailescu, was descending with an instructor when the rock anchor they were attached to broke, causing them to fall approximately 10-12 meters onto a rocky slope.
RESCUE EFFORT LASTED HOURS
Upon notification, four helicopters were dispatched to the area along with mountain rescue teams. The operation lasted about three hours due to rugged terrain and adverse conditions. Three seriously injured climbers were taken to hospital, while 36-year-old Mihailescu died despite all interventions.
INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED
Authorities in Romania have launched a judicial investigation into the incident. Initial assessments suggest the accident may have been caused by a technical failure in the safety system rather than human error, and equipment and safety procedures are under review.
SHE WAS AN EXPERIENCED MOUNTAINEER
Antonia Mihailescu, a dentist by profession, was reportedly experienced in mountaineering, having previously reached Uhuru Peak on Kilimanjaro, climbed to Everest Base Camp, and navigated various challenging routes in Peru.
