A 7.1 magnitude earthquake that shook the Kumamoto region in southwestern Japan brought a major disaster. Following the earthquake, a large explosion occurred at the Aeon Mall shopping center in the town of Kashima, Kumamoto. According to statements from the Japanese fire department and police, part of the building's second floor collapsed due to the explosion, and many people were trapped under the rubble. Rescue teams have launched extensive operations in the area.
CAUSE OF THE EXPLOSION UNDER INVESTIGATION
According to information in the local media, the explosion occurred about an hour after the earthquake. Workers in the area reported smelling a strong gas odor and hearing a loud explosion sound before the blast. However, authorities have not yet made an official statement regarding the cause of the explosion.
DEATH TOLL NOT ANNOUNCED
So far, there are no officially confirmed casualties related to the explosion at the shopping center. While authorities confirm that many people are stranded, they have reported that efforts to rescue the injured are ongoing. Across the earthquake region, it has been announced that at least 50 people were injured, some homes collapsed, and numerous structures were damaged.
EVACUATION CALL FOR OVER 150,000 PEOPLE
Following the earthquake, a tsunami warning was issued for the coasts of the Ariake Sea and Yatsushiro Sea, and approximately 150,000 people were asked to go to evacuation centers. The warning was later lifted. Power outages occurred in the area, train services were suspended, and roads and bridges sustained serious damage. Authorities warned that strong aftershocks may continue due to the shallow-focus earthquake.
