Loud explosion sounds and tremors that caused great panic in New England region of the USA frightened local residents. During the event, when houses shook and buildings vibrated, a bright light was seen in the sky. Authorities announced that a giant meteor releasing energy equivalent to about 300 tons of TNT exploded in the atmosphere. The moment of explosion was recorded by satellites, and its impact was felt over a wide area.

Citizens living in the US states of Massachusetts and New Hampshire experienced major panic due to powerful explosion sounds coming from the sky. Many people in the region reported that their homes shook and the explosions were heard from miles away.

Following the explosions, numerous posts were shared on social media, and the cause of the event was quickly investigated.

NASA MADE A STATEMENT

NASA News Deputy Director Jennifer Dooren announced in a statement that the explosions were caused by a large meteor entering the atmosphere.

Dooren stated that the celestial body disintegrated over northeastern Massachusetts and southeastern New Hampshire, adding that the event was not related to any meteor shower, space debris, or satellite.

ENERGY EQUIVALENT TO 300 TONS OF TNT RELEASED

According to NASA's assessments, approximately 300 tons of TNT equivalent energy was released during the meteor's disintegration.

Experts stated that this caused the loud explosion sounds and tremors felt in the region.

It was reported that the meteor entered Earth's atmosphere at a speed exceeding 120,000 kilometers per hour and disintegrated at an altitude of about 64 kilometers.

EXPLOSION MOMENT CAPTURED BY SATELLITES

The moment the meteor exploded in the atmosphere was also recorded by weather satellites operated by NOAA.

In the shared images, the celestial body was seen disintegrating in the atmosphere while emitting a bright light.

RECALLED THE CHELYABINSK EVENT

Experts noted that the incident brought to mind the meteor that disintegrated over the city of Chelyabinsk in Russia in 2013.

In the Chelyabinsk explosion, about 440 thousand tons of TNT equivalent energy was released, thousands of buildings were damaged by the shock wave, and more than 1,600 people were injured.

Scientists emphasize that many small celestial bodies enter Earth's atmosphere every day, but explosions felt on this scale are quite rare.
