The images of a young woman proposing to her boyfriend by kneeling have sparked a discussion questioning traditional gender roles related to marriage. This unusual proposal took place on October 27, at the Copes Lookout in Kirribilli, famous for its breathtaking views of Sydney Harbour. In the footage shared on the Instagram account of Personalised Proposals & Co, a woman in a red dress leads her blindfolded boyfriend to a lookout decorated with flowers, candles, and a romantic table. When her boyfriend removed the blindfold, he was stunned to see his girlfriend kneeling with an open ring box in her hand. When the woman proposed, the man leaned down and kissed her. While still kneeling, the woman slipped the ring onto the man's finger, and as the sun set over Sydney Harbour, they exchanged a few more words and embraced. However, despite the woman's impressive gesture, many Australians believe that the proposal should be made by the man. Comments on social media included "I would rather wrestle a shark in Sydney Harbour," "I would rather clean the entire house with a cotton swab," and "Girl, get up and stop embarrassing us." One user said, "Respect, but don’t beg him; if he cares and loves you, he will do it with respect and pride," while another joked, "From now on, let him carry and give birth to the baby." However, many Australians defended the woman for breaking societal norms. One person wrote, "This girl is breaking norms, and any man would appreciate that. She is strong and knows what she wants. All ladies take note." Another user added, "This woman has found someone she loves unconditionally and is willing to do anything for, and she proposed. I hope one day you all find someone you are willing to serve and support, and who can reciprocate that love." It is still unclear whether the proposal was a PR stunt by the personalized marriage proposal company.
