The long-standing feud between two families in Sultanbeyli has come to an end with a peace ceremony. The families declared their reconciliation through a symbolic transition accompanied by the Quran and the Turkish flag.
Two years ago, the feud between the Tor and Taşan families in Sultanbeyli, Istanbul, which resulted in the death of two people, ended in peace thanks to the mediation of prominent figures in the community.
THEY PASSED UNDER THE QUR'AN AND THE TURKISH FLAG
Members of the Tor and Taşan families from Bingöl came together at the peace ceremony held at Eyyübi Mosque. During the ceremony, the parties passed under the Qur'an and the Turkish flag, taking an oath of peace. This symbolic passage was considered an important step towards ensuring lasting peace.
"THIS PEACE IS VERY VALUABLE IN SUCH A TIME"
In a statement regarding the matter, Çağdaş Toplu, the President of the Seven Regions Seven Brothers Association, emphasized that this meaningful gathering is of great importance not only between the two families but also for the community as a whole. Toplu stated, "In a time when pain, blood, and tears are so intense, this peace is very valuable. Hopefully, it will be an example for world peace and social harmony. Let us love and forgive each other; the most precious life is the one lived in peace. I express my gratitude to our state leaders who fulfill their humanitarian and Islamic responsibilities and to both families."
WHAT DOES PASSING UNDER THE FLAG AND THE QUR'AN MEAN?
1. Symbolic Meaning
This practice symbolizes that both parties (usually families or communities in conflict) have ended their hostilities, intend to make peace, and have committed to this intention in front of religious and national values.
- The Qur'an, being the word of God, is a supreme symbol of truth, justice, and peace. Passing under it means making a promise in divine presence.
- The Turkish Flag represents national unity, homeland, and social solidarity. Passing under the flag is a sign of respect for social peace and belonging.
2. Form of the Practice
In peace ceremonies, it is generally applied as follows:
- The Qur'an and the Turkish flag are held high by two people in the ceremony area.
- The reconciling parties - usually elders, family heads, or direct parties to the feud - pass together under these symbols.
- During the passage, prayers are recited, and sometimes a concluding prayer or a short sermon is read.
- This passage signifies "the enmity is over, God and the nation are our witnesses."
3. Social Importance
Such ceremonies are particularly common in the Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia regions and hold great significance in social memory. These reconciliations, which involve state officials, opinion leaders, and religious figures, have been quite effective in resolving long-standing hostilities such as blood feuds.
