Turkey's first floating production platform "Osman Gazi", which will double natural gas production in the Sakarya Gas Field in the Black Sea, was sent off from Filyos to its mission location in the Blue Homeland. Former Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Dönmez and AK Party Group Chairman Abdullah Güler, who made assessments on Haberler.com's live broadcast at the ceremony area, announced that with the commissioning of the second phase, natural gas production would reach the level of neighboring Greece's annual consumption.
Turkey's first floating production platform “Osman Gazi”, which will double natural gas production in the Sakarya Gas Field in the Black Sea, was sent off with a ceremony from Zonguldak Filyos to its duty station in the Blue Homeland.
Former Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Dönmez and AK Party Group Chairman Abdullah Güler, who attended the ceremony, made important statements about the giant platform's journey and the future of the project.
DÖNMEZ: WE WILL PRODUCE AS MUCH GAS AS GREECE CONSUMES IN A YEAR
Responding to questions from Haberler.com Editor-in-Chief Bedia Teymur and Haberler.com economics writer Serpin Alparslan at the ceremony, former Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Dönmez recalled the project's past and the stages it has reached and made the following assessments:
“Yes, this is one of the moments we are very happy about and of which we are proud as a nation. As you know, the Sakarya Gas Field announced its discovery for the first time in 2020. Then, as a result of the work carried out, our first gas was supplied in April 2023 from here under the leadership of our President, with the participation of all our people.”
Emphasizing the importance of the second phase, Dönmez stressed that the gas processing process at sea has begun and said the following:
“The first phase will bring the raw gas we produce on land to the onshore processing facility via pipelines. Now, with the second phase, we will process the gas at sea. This platform has been equipped with advanced equipment. It has the feature of being Turkey's largest platform. Our goal is, of course, to become a fully independent country in energy. Because, as you also know, unfortunately we are a country dependent on foreign sources in energy. We have a large consumption. We also need to underline that. When we commissioned the first phase production, it had reached the point of meeting the natural gas that our neighbor Bulgaria consumes in a year. Now, with the second phase, we are becoming able to produce the gas that another neighbor, Greece, consumes in a year. When the third and fourth phases are commissioned, we will become able to meet about 75 percent of the gas of households in Turkey from this field.”
Recalling that they also faced criticism during his ministry, Dönmez concluded his words as follows:
“We will continue to serve 170 kilometers offshore in the depths of the Black Sea. There are component units on it. The units will process the gas and pump it to land. Therefore, we are also talking about a high-technology infrastructure. Our goal—the only goal of our ministry yesterday, today, and tomorrow—is to work without stopping until we become independent in energy. Unfortunately, from time to time while such work is being done, politics is being made. We saw that during the period when we were minister too. But now our people see once again that if you persevere and work with determination, the work yields results, and we have all eaten its fruit together.”
GÜLER: A SECOND PRODUCTION OF 10 MILLION CUBIC METERS PER DAY IS STARTING
AK Party Group Chairman Abdullah Güler, on the other hand, used the following statements regarding the platform's capacity and 2028 targets:
“Of course, we are proud. Truly, these investments made under the leadership of our President in past years in terms of energy supply security and our national security are bearing fruit today. Today, our beautiful platform Osman Gazi will, God willing, deliver to land a natural gas production of approximately 10 million cubic meters annually that will heat our homes for twenty years.”
Güler continued his speech about the platform's transit process and production targets as follows:
“As we said a little while ago, it has set out on a 24-hour journey right now. After that, at the site where it will produce, for about twenty years this floating platform ship will make great contributions to our country's energy supply security. But this is one stage; until now, the Sakarya gas field was already providing a production of 10 million cubic meters. Now we have moved to the second phase, God willing. Together with the Osman Gazi floating platform, there will be a second production of 10 million. Starting from the coming years, this will gradually increase. God willing, our target in 2028 is to realize here a production that will meet the gas of seventy-five percent of all our households.”
