While MHP leader Bahçeli's suggestion of a "coordinator" role for Öcalan sparks political debate, Yeniden Refah Party Chairman Fatih Erbakan argued that the process should be taken to a referendum.
MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli's proposal for a "coordinator" role regarding Abdullah Öcalan's position in the process caused widespread repercussions on the political agenda.
In his speech at his party's group meeting, Bahçeli stated that a new phase has been reached in the terror-free Turkey process and that the next step involves political and legal arrangements. Touching on debates about Öcalan's status, Bahçeli said, "If there is a status gap, this should be addressed in a way that contributes to the process."
"PEACE PROCESS COORDINATOR" PROPOSAL
Bahçeli also shared his proposal for the mentioned arrangement, stating that it could be called a "peace process and politicization coordinator." Indicating that different options could also be considered, Bahçeli expressed that the goal is for the PKK's founding leadership to take on a role within this framework.
HARSH REACTION FROM ERBAKAN
One of the first reactions to Bahçeli's statements came from Fatih Erbakan, Chairman of the New Welfare Party. Erbakan argued that Bahçeli's proposal confirmed the concerns they had previously raised, suggesting that the process could result in Öcalan's release and inclusion in active politics.
In his statement, Erbakan noted that they support the goal of a terror-free Turkey but do not accept the process advancing in this manner. Stating that the PKK does not represent Kurdish citizens, Erbakan said that the solution cannot be shaped around Öcalan's freedom.
Erbakan also remarked that the President has not taken a clear stance on the process and called for the issue to be brought to a referendum.
