A new era has begun in air transport between the US and Venezuela, which had been suspended for years. With direct flights resuming after approximately 7 years, the first service on the Miami–Caracas route has been carried out, and this development is seen as a sign of normalization in diplomatic and economic relations between the two countries.
Direct commercial flights between the US and Venezuela have resumed after a nearly 7-year hiatus. The US Department of State announced the restart of flights between Miami and Caracas.
FIRST FLIGHT ON THE MIAMI-CARACAS ROUTE
US-based American Airlines has launched daily flights on the Miami–Caracas route using Embraer 175 aircraft. The company reported that a second daily flight is planned starting May 21.
As part of the first flight, a passenger plane departed from Miami, Florida, to Caracas, the capital of Venezuela. It was noted that government officials and media representatives were on board.
STATEMENT FROM THE US STATE DEPARTMENT
The US Department of State, in a statement on social media, recalled that there have been no direct commercial flights between the two countries for approximately 7 years, stating, “Flights between Miami and Caracas are being resumed.”
BAN INTRODUCED IN 2019
Flights between the US and Venezuela were suspended by a decision made in 2019. The process restarted after the ban was lifted in January under a decision made during US President Donald Trump's administration, and American Airlines was granted flight permission in March.
SECURITY INSPECTIONS CONDUCTED
Prior to the resumption of flights, security procedures at the airport in Caracas were inspected by the US Transportation Security Administration. Additionally, the US Department of State lowered its travel advisory for Venezuela from "do not travel" to "reconsider travel."
NOTABLE TIMING
The resumption of flights drew attention as it occurred after Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was taken out of the country in January as part of an operation organized by the US.
It is known that American Airlines has been operating in Venezuela since 1987 and was the largest US airline in the country before the flight ban in 2019.
