Education was suspended on Wednesday, May 20, in the central district of Amasya and the Taşova district due to flood and inundation risks. In Tokat, due to heavy rainfall and increased flood risk in the Yeşilırmak River, schools in the Turhal district were closed for 3 days.

Education has been suspended in some districts of Amasya and Tokat due to the risk of potential floods and overflows.

In a statement from the Amasya Governorate, it was reported that overflows have occurred in the Yeşilırmak River and its tributary streams due to the heavy rains affecting the region in recent days. The statement included the following:

"THE WATER LEVEL IN THE YEŞILIRMAK WILL INCREASE SIGNIFICANTLY"

"Due to the heavy rains affecting our region in recent days, overflows have occurred at some points in the Yeşilırmak River and its tributary streams. Based on data received from meteorology, it is anticipated that the water level in the Yeşilırmak will increase significantly and new overflows may occur, as the rains are expected to continue in our region and the Tokat Almus Dam is expected to reach full capacity on Tuesday, May 19 (tomorrow), leading to water discharge from the dam. Considering all these possibilities, to prevent any negative incidents, education and training have been suspended for one (1) day on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, in all public and private nurseries, kindergartens, primary schools, secondary schools, high schools, vocational training centers, non-formal education institutions, maturation institutes, private tutoring courses, and special education and rehabilitation centers in our central district of Amasya and the district of Taşova (including their villages)."

EDUCATION SUSPENDED FOR 3 DAYS IN TOKAT'S TURHAL DISTRICT

Meanwhile, a statement also came from the Tokat Governorate. It announced that education has been suspended for 3 days in the Turhal district due to the heavy rains affecting the region and the increasing flood risk in the Yeşilırmak Basin.

In a public information release by the Tokat Governorate, it was stated that overflows have occurred at some points in the Yeşilırmak River and its tributary streams due to the rains in recent days. Noting that rains are expected to continue according to meteorological data, the statement indicated that the Almus Dam is projected to reach full capacity on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, with water discharge from the dam. Therefore, it was reported that the water level in the Yeşilırmak could increase significantly and new overflows may occur. The statement announced the suspension of education on May 20, 21, and 22 in all public and private nurseries, kindergartens, primary schools, high schools, vocational training centers, non-formal education institutions, private education courses, and special education and rehabilitation centers across the Turhal district to prevent potential negative outcomes. Additionally, it was stated that pregnant and disabled personnel working in public institutions and organizations would be considered on administrative leave on the same dates.
