The first statement from former HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş, who is imprisoned, came after the call of the terrorist organization PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan to lay down arms and dissolve the organization.
In his article published in Gazete Duvar, Demirtaş stated that this process should be advanced, provided that the necessary legal and political infrastructure is established in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM).
"FIRST, LET'S EMBRACE EACH OTHER"
Making a call for peace, Demirtaş emphasized that the process is not limited to the silence of weapons, but that a political solution is also important. Demirtaş stated, "I do not want my soldier brother on duty in Gabar or my biological brother in Kandil to die. Both should stop shooting at each other. First, let us embrace each other as Turks and Kurds with the memory of a thousand years, the rest is the job of political struggle, it is our job," he expressed.
"I WILL DO MORE THAN MY BEST"
Demirtaş, who stated that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli, and PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan have taken the initiative in this process, said, "May God grant them all a long and healthy life, but I will do more than my best for these three leaders who have taken the initiative for Middle Eastern peace and the historic Kurdish-Turkish peace to succeed in the final phase of their lives."
"SUPPORTING PEACE IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO"
Demirtaş also made statements regarding some groups' cautious approach to this call, responding to those who said, "This is not enough for me," by saying, "Dear brother, if those who hold the weapon have decided to end the war, what exactly are you disturbed about? If the path will continue with political, civil struggle, do you not trust yourself? If you are doing politics by relying on the weapon of the PKK or the state, of course, you will be uneasy about the end of the war. However, every war has an end, and supporting peace by preparing yourself for this is the most moral and correct thing to do.
If you say, 'I am Kurdish, what will happen to my rights?' you must first trust yourself. You must trust your experiences, your knowledge, and your organized and political people. If you are afraid that 'I am Turkish, if concessions are made to 'terror', won't my country, my state be divided?' then you must first trust yourself and then your Kurdish brother who has been your sibling for a thousand years," he replied.
"IT IS NOT AS EASY AS IT SEEMS"
Demirtaş also expressed that the process should be taken seriously, stating, "This job is not that simple. But realizing this 'simple' thing requires serious work, effort, and planning. Because this is the Middle East, hands are still on alert, blood is still being shed. It is serious because death is serious, and if there is one thing more serious than death, it is life. Trying to make life prevail over these two serious things is not as easy as it seems from the outside," he wrote.
