Jose Mujica, the former president of Uruguay known for his humble lifestyle and recognized as "the world's poorest president," passed away at the age of 89 in Montevideo.
It has been reported that former Uruguayan President Jose Mujica has passed away at the age of 89.
FORMER LEADER OF URUGUAY MUJICA HAS DIED
Uruguayan President Yamandu Orsi announced on the social media platform X that Mujica, known among the public by the nickname "Pepe," has passed away in the capital city of Montevideo.
Orsi expressed great sadness over Mujica's death, stating, "We announce the passing of our comrade Pepe Mujica with deep sorrow. A president, a militant, a leader, and a guide... We will miss you dearly, beloved old man. Thank you for everything you gave us and for your deep love for your people." He had recently stated in a press release that Mujica's health was deteriorating.
In a statement made in 2021, Mujica announced that he had been diagnosed with a malignant tumor in his esophagus and expressed that he was withdrawing from active politics.

Spending his last years on his modest farm in the rural area of Montevideo, Mujica won the presidential election in 2009 and served as the President of Uruguay from 2010 to 2015. During his term, Mujica gained worldwide recognition and respect for his modest lifestyle, humility, and being close to the people.
