While the Marmara and Black Sea regions are surrendering to storms and downpours, thermometers in the Southeast have reached dangerous levels. In the middle of August, two different weather conditions are affecting Turkey. The latest forecast maps updated by the General Directorate of Meteorology reveal the weather difference between the west and south of the country. On one hand, strong wind and heavy rain warnings are coming one after another, while on the other hand, there are cities scorching under the sun.
STORM ALARM IN MARMARA AND NORTHERN AEGEAN
Today (Thursday, August 13), especially those living in coastal areas and those with travel plans need to be careful. Starting from the morning hours, strong winds will begin to show their effect along the coastline of Canakkale, Balikesir, and Izmir. According to MGM data, wind speeds are expected to reach 60-80 kilometers per hour.
The storm is expected to maintain its intensity throughout the day and last until the nighttime hours. It is recommended that everyone spending time in the Aegean and Marmara, especially those using maritime transportation, take precautions against risks such as roofs being blown off and trees falling over.
FLOOD ALARM IN THE BLACK SEA REGION
While a storm is affecting the west of the country, the Black Sea Region is also facing thunderstorms. A heavy rain warning was issued for the surrounding areas of Kastamonu, Amasya, Ordu, Trabzon, Rize, and Artvin from Thursday morning. While precipitation is expected to intensify during the midday hours, citizens have been warned against the risks of floods and water overflows.
SOUTHEAST SCORCHING
While warnings are coming one after another in the north and west, the picture in Southeastern Anatolia is completely different. On Thursday, temperatures in Diyarbakir, Sanliurfa, and Batman are expected to reach 40-41 degrees. No significant cooling is expected in the region throughout the week, and sunny and scorching weather will maintain its dominance. Experts, pointing out the risk of sunstroke especially during the midday hours, recommend that those with chronic illnesses and the elderly avoid going outside.
WHAT IS THE WEATHER LIKE TODAY?
MORNING (06:00 - 12:00)
In the morning hours of Thursday, rainy weather is affecting the northern parts of the country. A "Heavy Rain" warning was issued especially for the Central and Eastern Black Sea coasts and inland areas (around Kastamonu, Amasya, Ordu). While thunderstorms are expected in the eastern Marmara Region (Kocaeli, Sakarya, Bilecik) and the northeast of Eastern Anatolia, strong winds reaching 60-80 km/h will be effective on the western coasts of the Aegean and Marmara. A large part of the south, interior, and west of the country will be sunny and partly cloudy.
MIDDAY HOURS (12:00 - 18:00)
By midday, the rainy system over the Black Sea is expected to expand its area of influence. The heavy rains in the Black Sea Region will continue to be effective around Sinop and Trabzon during this period. In addition to the rains in the north, thunderstorms are also expected to begin in the south around Adana and Osmaniye. The strong wind of 60-80 km/h on the western coasts (Marmara and Aegean) will continue to blow during this time period as well.
EVENING (18:00 - 24:00)
In the evening hours, rainy areas across the country are expected to shrink, but thunderstorms are forecast to continue along the Black Sea coastline, the east of Marmara, and the north of Eastern Anatolia. The heavy rain warning in the Black Sea region will remain valid for the surroundings of Samsun and Ordu during this period. In the southern parts, rains will continue around Kahramanmaras and Osmaniye. The strong wind that has been effective throughout the day in our western regions will maintain its direction and speed in the evening hours as well.
NIGHT (00:00 - 06:00)
In the first hours of Friday (between midnight and morning), thunderstorms will continue to be locally effective in the southeast of Marmara (Yalova, Bursa, Bilecik), the Black Sea coasts (Zonguldak, Sinop, Samsun, Trabzon, Rize), and around Osmaniye in the south. The strong wind of 60-80 km/h blowing on our western coasts (western Marmara and Northern Aegean) is expected to continue its effect during the night hours. In the remaining large part of the country, the night hours will be partly cloudy or clear.
