Germany deployed the mine-hunting ship Fulda to the Mediterranean in order not to waste time for a possible mission in the Strait of Hormuz if the Iran war ends.
As uncertainty persists regarding when the war between the US and Iran will end, some countries are preparing for mine clearance operations in the Strait of Hormuz. Germany has deployed the minesweeper Fulda to the Mediterranean for a potential post-war mission in the Strait of Hormuz. The farewell ceremony for the German Navy's minesweeper Fulda, embarking on its critical mission, was held at the Kiel-Wiek naval base in northern Germany.
40 PERSONNEL ON BOARD THE MINESWEEPER
It was reported that the Fulda minesweeper carries approximately 40 personnel, including expert mine detection and disposal specialists. The personnel are said to be skilled in using sonar systems and remotely operated underwater drones for mine hunting and sweeping operations. The soldiers serving on the Fulda, which set out with ammunition, supplies, and protective equipment against solar radiation, were also issued beige summer uniforms to be worn during a potential assignment in the Strait of Hormuz.
APPROVAL NEEDED FOR FULDA'S MISSION IN HORMUZ
After reaching the Mediterranean, the German Navy vessel Fulda will join NATO's Standing Mine Countermeasures Group 2 (SNMCMG-2), responsible for mine warfare naval operations and training activities in the Mediterranean, Black Sea, and Aegean. However, the Fulda must be authorized by the German Federal Parliament (Bundestag) for a potential post-war deployment to the Strait of Hormuz. If it is decided to take on a mission in the Strait of Hormuz, the Fulda minesweeper will not be alone in the region. An air defense frigate, a supply ship, and a maritime surveillance aircraft will accompany the Fulda in the Strait of Hormuz area. The German Federal Parliament will have the final say on the scope and duration of the Fulda minesweeper's potential mission in the Strait of Hormuz.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated that a prerequisite for the German Navy to operate in the Strait of Hormuz is the end of hostilities, and noted that the Fulda's ability to serve in the region would require authorization from the German Parliament.
