German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated, "We call for a return to serious negotiations for a ceasefire" regarding the ongoing attacks by Israel on the Gaza Strip.
After taking office, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul made an official visit to Israel. Meeting with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, Wadephul criticized Israel's ongoing attacks on the Gaza Strip.
Wadephul said that the conflict in Gaza cannot be resolved through military means and that a political solution must be found to permanently end the war.
"WE CALL FOR A RETURN TO SERIOUS NEGOTIATIONS FOR A CEASEFIRE"
Wadephul stated that Germany will do whatever is necessary to ensure Israel's security, but this does not mean that his country cannot criticize Israel's actions. "I am not sure whether all of Israel's strategic goals can be achieved in this way (through military operations) and whether this will serve Israel's security in the long term. Therefore, we call for a return to serious negotiations for a ceasefire," he said.
"WE NEED A POLITICAL SOLUTION"
Stating that Gaza is part of Palestinian territory, Wadephul said, "We need a political solution for the reconstruction of Gaza that does not involve Hamas."
After his meeting with Saar, Wadephul will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. Wadephul will then meet with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa in the West Bank.
