Following the footage showing an employee at a nursing home in Büyükçekmece assaulting an elderly man while wearing gloves, the Ministry of Family and Social Services took action. In a statement from the ministry, it was announced that a criminal complaint had been filed regarding the incident, the responsible manager's approval for management and work had been revoked, and a monetary fine had been imposed on the elderly care center.
In the images reportedly taken at the Özel Büyük Marmara Nursing Home located in the Büyükçekmece district of Istanbul, moments were captured showing the owner of the nursing home, Erol Konuk, physically assaulting elderly Abdulkadir Taşar. The footage clearly showed Konuk wearing gloves, shouting at the elderly man, and hitting him. Following the shocking images, the Ministry of Family and Social Services took action.
MINISTRY TAKES ACTION
In a statement regarding the issue made by the Ministry of Family and Social Services, the following was stated: "Today, it has been deemed appropriate to make the following statement regarding the news and posts titled 'Violence in a private nursing home in Büyükçekmece' that appeared in some media outlets and social media platforms."
"A CRIMINAL COMPLAINT HAS BEEN FILED"
Immediately after the identification of the mentioned footage, our provincial directorate teams promptly visited the relevant private elderly care center to initiate the necessary investigation.
Additionally, an investigator has been assigned by our ministry, and a criminal complaint has been filed with the Büyükçekmece Chief Public Prosecutor's Office simultaneously.
"THE RESPONSIBLE MANAGER'S APPROVAL HAS BEEN REVOKED"
As an administrative precaution, the approval of the Responsible Manager Y.K. has been revoked.
"A FINE HAS BEEN IMPOSED"
As a result of the investigator's examination, an administrative fine has been imposed on the private elderly care center; all necessary sanctions, including closure of the relevant institution, will be applied without hesitation depending on the outcome of the judicial proceedings."
"THEY HAVE BEEN BEATING ME SINCE MORNING"
In the footage recorded in July 2023, the elderly man was heard saying, "They have been beating me since morning. They slapped me. My parents have never beaten me this much."
WORE GLOVES AND BEAT THE ELDERLY MAN
Following these words, Erol Konuk was seen shouting, "Show me where they hit you!" and asking a staff member for gloves while physically assaulting the elderly man. These moments touched the conscience of the viewers.
According to a report by Erdem Atay from Veryansın, it was claimed that Abdulkadir Taşar, who was allegedly subjected to violence, passed away in the hospital in September 2024, but it was alleged that no autopsy was performed after his death.
THREATENED STAFF AS WELL
Speaking about the allegations, the nursing home management stated that Erol Konuk would not be allowed back into the nursing home.
Furthermore, it was also claimed that Erol Konuk threatened some staff members who left the nursing home and those who complained about him. According to allegations, Konuk attempted to intimidate the employees with statements like, "I won't let you stay in Istanbul."
