The body of Iran's former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was brought to the city of Qom after ceremonies in Tehran. The body will later be taken to Najaf, Karbala, and Mashhad.
The body of Iran's former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who lost his life in the first minutes of the war launched by the US and Israel against Iran, was transported to the city of Qom, the next stop after three days of funeral ceremonies in Tehran. According to Iran's official news agency IRNA, funeral prayers were held for Khamenei at the Jamkaran Mosque in Qom.
MANY SENIOR OFFICIALS ATTENDED THE CEREMONY
Along with Ali Khamenei, the bodies of four family members who were reported to have died in the US and Israeli attack on February 28 were also carried as part of the ceremony. The funeral prayer in Qom, considered one of the important educational centers of Shia Islamic teachings, was led by one of Iran's prominent religious scholars, Ayatollah Abdullah Javadi Amoli, and the ceremony was attended by clerics, seminary students, government officials, senior military commanders, and a large number of citizens.
After the funeral prayer, Khamenei's body will be carried in a funeral procession from the Jamkaran Mosque to the shrine of Hazrat Fatima Masumeh, which is considered sacred for Shia Muslims.
According to IRNA, thousands of people who wished to attend the funeral began arriving in Qom from Monday afternoon. From early morning, the courtyards and prayer areas of the mosque filled up, and many people were seen arriving at the ceremony site by vehicle and on foot.
THE CEREMONY IS NOT YET OVER
It was reported that the ongoing funeral program in Qom will later include Najaf and Karbala, and finally, Khamenei will be laid to rest at the Imam Reza Shrine in his hometown of Mashhad.
KHAMENEI'S SON DID NOT ATTEND THE CEREMONIES
Khamenei's son and the new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, did not appear in public during the funeral ceremonies. Tehran claims that Mojtaba Khamenei did not attend the ceremonies for security reasons.
PEZESHKIAN ATTENDED THE CEREMONY
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was also among those who attended the funeral ceremony. In a post on his X account, Pezeshkian said, "Today, we will continue Iran's path of honor, progress, and glory."
The ceremony was also attended by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Head of the Judiciary Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejei, IRGC Quds Force Commander Ismail Qaani, and Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Mohammad Bagher Zolqadr.
Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was also seen at the funeral. After disagreements with Khamenei in the final period of his term, Ahmadinejad appeared in public for the first time since the war began.
