The tension that rose with Iran's attack on warships in Hormuz and the US's harsh retaliation eased somewhat with President Donald Trump's statement. US President Trump stated, 'They were firing at us, and we responded. The ceasefire continues,' and when asked if a deal with Iran was imminent, he replied, 'It could happen at any moment. I believe they want this deal more than I do.'
US President Donald Trump stated that talks with Iranians continue despite rising tensions between the two countries, saying, "This could happen at any moment. Maybe it won't, but it could happen at any moment."
US President Trump assessed the Iran agenda after inspecting renovation work at a decorative pool near the Washington Monument. Trump said that despite the US military's airstrikes on two Iranian locations, talks with the Tehran administration continue.
"A DEAL COULD HAPPEN ANY MOMENT, OR MAYBE NOT"
Responding to a question about whether a deal with Iran is imminent, Trump said, "This could happen at any moment. Maybe it won't, but it could happen at any moment. I believe they want this deal more than I do," signaling that they are close to an agreement.
"IF THEY DON'T SIGN, THEY WILL SUFFER GREATLY"
Trump called on Tehran to sign the deal as soon as possible, saying, "They had better sign the deal quickly. If it is not signed, they will suffer greatly."
"THEY WERE SHOOTING AT US, AND WE RESPONDED"
Trump stated that Iran attacked two US destroyers passing through the Strait of Hormuz but that the destroyers sustained no damage in these attacks, saying, "They were shooting at us, and we responded."
Trump argued that his basic expectation regarding Iran is that "Iran does not possess nuclear weapons," and that Iranians have actually accepted this but have not yet signed the deal, adding, "We will not give them the right to have nuclear weapons; the chance of that is zero, and they know it and have accepted it. Let's see if they are willing to sign." Trump indicated that he thinks Iran will deliver enriched uranium to them, but emphasized that he will remain cautious until this matter is clarified.
