An incident between a couple undergoing divorce in İzmir drew attention with its unusual defenses in the indictment. Following the complaint of the woman, who claimed that her husband entered their home wearing a wig and contact lenses, assaulted her, and threatened her, a case was filed against the defendant, who was arrested, with a request for a prison sentence of up to 24 years and 9 months. The defendant's defense, which blamed "ChatGPT," made a significant impact on the case file.
In Izmir, a lawsuit has been filed against a defendant who allegedly assaulted and threatened his estranged wife after entering her home wearing a wig and contact lenses, with a prison sentence of up to 24 years and 9 months sought.
Neyir Gizem Yılmaz (41), who lives in Karşıyaka, claimed that her estranged husband Halim Yılmaz (41) came to her house wearing a wig and contact lenses, forcibly entered, and assaulted her. Following the woman's complaint, Halim Yılmaz was arrested by the police. After the investigation by the Karşıyaka Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, a lawsuit was filed against Halim Yılmaz, seeking a prison sentence of up to 24 years and 9 months.
DENIED THE ALLEGATIONS
In the indictment, the suspect Yılmaz stated that he did not go to his wife's street or house on the day of the incident and claimed that he did not threaten or act against her.
Claiming that his wife's statements were products of imagination or fiction, Yılmaz defended himself by saying, "I absolutely do not accept the accusations against me. In today's world, with cameras everywhere, why would I attempt such a thing?"
BLAMED CHATGPT
Halim Yılmaz alleged that his wife asked ChatGPT, "Is my husband cheating on me?" and claimed that the answers given by the artificial intelligence led her to believe she was being cheated on, thus destroying their family.
The suspect Yılmaz stated, "I think my wife's psychology is not normal. She watches excessive series and movies and is influenced by them. I even suspect that she hired an extra just to blame me."
ALLEGEDLY WORE A WIG AND BLUE LENSES TO AVOID RECOGNITION
The complainant Neyir Gizem Yılmaz recounted that when she saw a person with dark black, slightly long hair, covering part of their face with their hair, and with blue eyes when approached, she tried to close her apartment door, but this person prevented her from closing it and entered her home.
She claimed that after this person entered her home and removed their wig, they said, "Don't be afraid, calm down, don't scream, I won't hurt you." Neyir Gizem Yılmaz stated, "I realized it was my husband, who wore blue lenses to avoid recognition, and I was very scared."
CONTENTIOUS DIVORCE CASE CONTINUES
The indictment noted that the complainant Neyir Gizem Yılmaz lives with her 9-year-old son and that a contentious divorce case is ongoing with her estranged husband, suspect Halim Yılmaz, and that a 3-month protection order against the suspect is still in effect.
The indictment stated that on the day of the incident, the suspect attacked the complainant and applied physical violence, stuffing pieces of cloth into her mouth, causing her to struggle to breathe, and that in this way, the suspect allegedly injured his wife in a manner that could be remedied with simple medical intervention.
"SUFFICIENT EVIDENCE TO ESTABLISH REASONABLE SUSPICION HAS BEEN OBTAINED"
The indictment detailed that on the day of the incident, the suspect entered the complainant's residence without her consent, using force and threats, and after incapacitating her, threatened her with statements such as, "Don't make a sound, if you scream, I'll kill you," "You are cheating on me," "You ruined me," and "Don't try to manipulate me." It was stated that the evidence obtained, including the complainant's statements, corroborating forensic reports, his defense, and police records, indicated that he committed the alleged crimes, establishing sufficient suspicion for his prosecution.
The indictment requested that the suspect be sentenced to 7 years and 10.5 months to 24 years and 9 months in prison for the crimes of "intentional injury to a spouse," "threat," "insult," "violation of the inviolability of the dwelling," and "deprivation of liberty."
RELEASED TO BE TRIED WITHOUT CUSTODY
Following the acceptance of the indictment by the Karşıyaka 3rd Criminal Court of First Instance, the trial of the defendant Halim Yılmaz began in November.
Defendant Yılmaz, in his defense at the first hearing, claimed that he went to his estranged wife's house to inform her that he would be moving to Ankara and to see their child, stating that his wife was initially surprised to see him and then began to insult him while shouting.
Yılmaz stated that he retracted his statement made during the investigation and did not accept the accusations against him.
The complainant Neyir Gizem Yılmaz expressed that she was afraid of the defendant and reported that she was pressing charges.
During the second hearing of the case, where witnesses were also heard, the court decided to release the defendant, who had been in custody for 65 days, considering that the evidence had been collected, he had no prior criminal record, and the duration of his detention.
The hearing was adjourned to March 6, 2026.
MONITORED WITH AN ELECTRONIC BRACELET
Neyir Gizem Yılmaz stated that the incident occurred in September during the morning when she was sending her son off to school.
She expressed that she saw a person wearing a wig to hide their face and identity, with their mouth and face covered, and that the attacker, despite the warm weather, was wearing long and layered clothing, giving a frightening appearance with blue eyes and black hair.
Yılmaz noted that as she tried to quickly close the door, the attacker ran towards her, saying, "It was a huge tragedy in my life and it was terrifying. As I was trying to close the door quickly, he came running. He tried to get inside. There was a struggle. During that struggle, he probably hit my head somewhere or pushed the door quickly; I don't know. Because at that time, I had a cut and bleeding on my head. I remember being on the ground with him on top of me. Later, he held my mouth shut and opened it, stuffing pieces of cloth into my mouth. He pushed it down to my throat. I remember that my jaw and teeth felt like they were going to break, and I couldn't eat or drink anything for a week after the incident."
Yılmaz stated that she realized the attacker was her estranged husband when he removed the wig and revealed his face, saying, "I couldn't recognize my husband, the person I had been with for 11 years. He looked like someone else. He had bright blue eyes and black hair."
Yılmaz noted that there were camera recordings of her husband fleeing with the wig from the garage, two witnesses, and police reports.
While in shock, she tried to stay calm and delayed the attacker, and when she opened her phone, she pressed the Women's Support Application (KADES), stating that her husband was caught the next day, remained in prison for about 2 months, and was released at the last hearing to be tried without custody.
Yılmaz expressed that despite the Family Court's decision to place an electronic bracelet on her husband and a restraining order, she was still afraid and wanted her safety to be ensured.
