Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has traveled to Washington for his first face-to-face meeting with US President Donald Trump following the clashes with Iran. The two leaders will discuss regional security and the peace process, with Iran as a primary focus.
IRAN TOPS THE AGENDA
In a statement before his departure to Washington, Netanyahu said, "In this complex period, we must act with great determination and great wisdom. We will discuss all issues on the agenda, first and foremost Iran. Our goal is to maintain our security and expand the circle of peace."
This visit marks the eighth meeting between Netanyahu and Trump since Trump returned to office, and it will be their first face-to-face encounter since February, before the joint air operation against Iran.
FIRST FACE-TO-FACE CONTACT AFTER IRAN TENSIONS
After the US paused its two-week bombing campaign against Iran this month over the weekend, Iran also announced it would suspend its attacks. Israel had warned it would respond harshly to any potential attack from Tehran.
DIFFERENCES OF OPINION BETWEEN THE TWO LEADERS
In recent weeks, Netanyahu has acknowledged that Israel's and the US's regional interests have sometimes diverged, leading to some differences of opinion with Trump. A leaked phone call between the two leaders in June revealed that Trump used harsh language toward Netanyahu, which was also reported in the media.
GAZA AND LEBANON ALSO ON THE TABLE
Israel announced it would allow a multinational security force to enter the region as part of Trump's Gaza plan, and on July 21, it reported the redeployment of some of its troops in southern Lebanon under US-backed agreements.
Netanyahu's visit to Washington is also significant for boosting his public support ahead of the elections scheduled for October 27.
