In a horrific accident in Mersin, a vehicle lost control by its driver and ran over citizens waiting at a pedestrian crossing. In the tragic accident, 3 people lost their lives, and 3 others were injured. It was observed that the identities of the 3 individuals were still at a young age.
While trying to overtake the vehicle in front of her in the central Mediterranean district of Mersin, the driver lost control of the SUV, which then crashed into the citizens on the median. Three people died in the accident, and three others were injured.
LOST CONTROL AND CRASHED INTO THE MEDIAN The accident occurred around 20:45 on the D-400 highway in the Bekirde neighborhood of the district. According to reports, the SUV with license plate 33 ATE 039, driven by Melis Kuş (25), lost control while trying to overtake another vehicle. The SUV, whose driver lost control, crashed into the citizens waiting on the median.
IDENTITIES OF THE DECEASED REVEALED It was learned that the deceased at the scene were Zehra Serdil Atak (18) and Kübra Güney (15), while the child who died in the hospital was Büşra Güney (15). The injured individuals named Burkan Acar (21), Yunus Bagi (35), and Necla Öztürk (15) are reported to be receiving treatment in hospitals.
Büşra Güney DRIVER IN CUSTODY Meanwhile, it was reported that the driver of the vehicle with license plate 33 ATE 039, a woman named M.K. (25), who hit the pedestrians, has been taken into custody and judicial proceedings regarding the incident are ongoing.
Kübra Güney STATEMENT FROM THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE In a statement regarding the incident, the governor's office said: "On February 2, 2026, around 20:45, a traffic accident occurred at the Bekirde intersection traffic lights in our Mediterranean district, where a vehicle, while trying to overtake another vehicle, hit our citizens at the pedestrian crossing. According to initial determinations, unfortunately, 3 of our citizens have lost their lives, and 3 of our citizens have been injured. We wish God's mercy upon the citizens who lost their lives in the accident, condolences to their grieving families and relatives, and urgent recovery to the injured."
