Harun Baran (18), who came to the shore in Maltepe with his friends, drowned after entering the sea to cool off. Pulled from the water by bystanders and taken to the hospital, Baran died one day later. Baran will be laid to rest in his hometown of Van.
On Monday, July 20, around 6:00 PM, tense moments were experienced at Maltepe Küçükyalı Coast. Harun Baran, who came to Istanbul from Çorlu, Tekirdağ to visit three friends, entered the sea to cool off. After a while, his friends noticed Baran had disappeared in the water and alerted those nearby for help. Upon the report, marine police, coast guard, and medical teams were dispatched to the area. Harun Baran was retrieved from the sea by the teams, and after initial first aid at the scene, he was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
COULD NOT BE SAVED DESPITE ALL INTERVENTIONS Harun Baran, who was taken into intensive care, could not be saved yesterday afternoon despite all medical interventions. Baran's body was taken to the Forensic Medicine Institute morgue for autopsy procedures.
WILL BE BURIED IN HIS HOMETOWN After the autopsy procedures at the Forensic Medicine Institute were completed, Harun Baran's body was received by his relatives. It was learned that Baran will be buried in his hometown of Van.
"I KNOW HOW TO SWIM, I’LL GO IN" Harun Baran's relative, Muhammed Kamer, described the incident and said:
"While walking along the coast, he said he knew how to swim and would go into the sea. But that place is not really suitable for swimming. I looked and checked; he just said 'I know how to swim, I’ll go in' on his own impulse, jumped in, and disappeared. Many drowning incidents have occurred before in Maltepe Küçükyalı."
Harun Baran "THERE WERE PEOPLE WHO COULD INTERVENE, BUT NO ONE DARED" Continuing his statements, Kamer highlighted the danger of the area and added:
"The place where he drowned is very deep. People enter but cannot swim out. Normally, you swim slowly near the rocks. When he jumped directly in, there was no way back. There were people who could intervene at that moment, but no one dared. Two or three motorcyclists helped and pulled him out of the water within five minutes. Medical teams performed CPR at the scene and restarted his heart, but the doctor said brain death had occurred. He was taken to the hospital but could not be saved."
