Social Security Consultant Ali Duman was a guest of Abdurrahman Yazıcı on Haberler.com screens. During the broadcast, the process of determining the minimum wage, the impact of inflation, and the financial difficulties faced by workers were scrutinized. Duman stated, "In terms of basic needs, the price increases in our country are really not comparable to those in Europe."

US-TURKEY MINIMUM WAGE COMPARISON

Duman pointed out that the minimum wage is equivalent to $1300 in the US and only $550 in Turkey, highlighting the imbalance between income and expenses. Duman emphasized that "the minimum wage should not be evaluated solely based on income," and that many factors, from the number of people in a household to rent prices and tax brackets, should be taken into account. "We should not think of the minimum wage solely in terms of income; expense items are also important, tax brackets, rent amounts, living costs, and how many people live in the household are significant. As you know, in many European countries, if the money coming into the house does not cover the household expenses, social supports are also added," he said.

CAN THE EUROPEAN SYSTEM BE A MODEL FOR TURKEY?

According to Duman, in European countries, if a household's expenses cannot be covered by income, the government intervenes with social support. He expressed that this understanding is lacking in Turkey and stated that price increases are at a level that cannot be compared to Europe. "One of the inflation items is the increase in labor costs."

DOES THE NEW HAL LAW PROMISE HOPE?

Duman noted that one of the items of inflation is labor costs and reminded that double-digit inflation is rarely seen in Europe. Duman stated, "There is a system in Europe where the selling price of products in supermarkets cannot be freely determined," and added that the new hal law to be enacted in Turkey could prevent exorbitant price increases at this point. You rarely see double-digit inflation in European countries. There is a standard in Europe; there is a system that determines the sale of produced products in supermarkets. This system does not allow you to raise prices as much as you want. The new hal law to be enacted in our country could prevent exorbitant price increases. In terms of basic needs, the price increases in our country are really not comparable to those in Europe."
