A horrific incident occurred at Chabahar Konarak International Airport in southern Iran: A mechanic lost his life by being sucked into the engine of a Varesh Airlines Boeing 737-500 aircraft during maintenance. The plane took off from Tehran in the early hours and landed safely in Chabahar. After the passengers and crew disembarked, mechanic Abolfazl Amiri began routine maintenance work.
ACCIDENT OCCURRED DURING TEST
However, tragedy struck here. When the engine was started for testing, the covers of the right-side engine were open and a safety zone had been established. Amiri approached the engine and was sucked into it because he had forgotten a tool inside! Amiri, who had no chance of escaping from the CFM56 engine, was faced with an even worse situation when the engine caught fire.
The airport fire brigade quickly intervened and extinguished the fire, but the rescue teams could only recover the remains of Abolfazl Amiri.
Iranian aviation authorities launched an investigation into the incident, and the Boeing aircraft was grounded for a week for repairs.
