The two children also attacked students in the schoolyard with a knife.
THEY WERE ARRESTED
After the incident, M.F.C. and A.E.K., aged 17 and 16, were taken into custody and were arrested by the court on charges of 'intentional injury' and 'threat' and sent to Kavak Children's Closed Prison.
UNIONS REACT TO VIOLENCE
Following the incident, representatives from Türk Eğitim-Sen, Eğitim-Bir-Sen, Eğitim-İş, and Eğitim-Sen held a joint press conference in front of the school to protest against violence. The assaulted teacher, Umut Deniz Mert, also participated in the statement to show support.
"THE TEACHER JUMPED ON THE KNIFE TO PREVENT A TRAGEDY"
Describing his experience, Umut Deniz Mert said, "As a supervising teacher, I was trying to get the children out of the school. One of them had a stone and hit me. My supervising colleague and I got the children outside. At that moment, they attacked the students with a 25-centimeter knife. The other supervising teacher jumped on the knife to prevent a tragedy. These children had previously stabbed another student at our school. They were released after 20 days. They returned to our school and carried out a new attack. Perhaps we prevented a major disaster. I am not a hero; I just did my job. We want increased security in schools," he stated.
"THERE IS NO INNOCENCE IN ANY VIOLENCE OR VANDALISM"
Speaking on behalf of the unions, Güngör Bağ, the President of Türk Eğitim-Sen Branch No. 1, stated, "Let’s create awareness together. Let’s stand against all forms of violence. We must set a good moral example for our children. There is no innocence in any violence or vandalism. Security measures in educational institutions should be considered more comprehensively," he expressed.
