Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara, who traveled to the United States to attend the UN General Assembly, made striking statements to reporters. Emphasizing that they are fighting against the terrorist organization ISIS, Shara stated, "We have expelled Iranian militias and Hezbollah from Syria." He pointed out that all of this is actually the responsibility of the international community, saying, "The international community has not been able to rescue even a single hostage."

Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara gave an interview to the U.S.-based television channel CBS. Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara stated that the international community has failed to protect civilians in his country, to release detainees, and to stop the use of chemical weapons, saying, "All these noble actions we have carried out in Syria should have been the responsibility of the international community. We should be the ones asking why you remained silent while these terrible crimes were being committed in Syria."

Al-Shara described U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to lift sanctions on Syria as "swift, brave, and historic." He acknowledged that Syria should be safe, stable, and united, stating, "This is in the best interest not only of Syria but of all countries in the world."

"REFUGEES CAN NOW RETURN HOME"

Al-Shara called on the U.S. to start discussions on numerous issues and mutual interests and to rebuild relations in a good and direct manner. Expressing that they have liberated the Syrian people from the oppression imposed by the Bashar al-Assad regime, al-Shara stated that refugees and displaced persons can now return to their homes.

"THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY COULDN'T EVEN SAVE A SINGLE DETAINEE"

Emphasizing that they are fighting against the terrorist organization ISIS, al-Shara stated, "We expelled Iranian militias and Hezbollah from the region." He pointed out that all of this is actually the responsibility of the international community, saying, "The international community couldn't even save a single detainee, nor could it break the siege of a single town."

"WHY DID YOU REMAIN SILENT?"

Al-Shara noted that the international community has failed to protect civilians, to release detainees, and to stop the use of chemical weapons, saying, "All these noble actions we have carried out in Syria should have been the responsibility of the international community. We should be the ones asking why you remained silent while these terrible crimes were being committed in Syria." He stated that opposing the lifting of sanctions on Syria would only increase the suffering of the people, saying, "Anyone who opposes the lifting of sanctions will be complicit in the killing of the Syrian people once again."

FIRST SINCE 1967

Al-Shara will be the first Syrian President to speak at the UN since former President Nureddin al-Atasi, who served in 1967. It is expected that al-Shara will address the latest situation between Syria and Israel and the sanctions during his meetings.

Syria's Foreign Minister Assad Hasan Shaybani visited Washington last week to meet with U.S. Treasury Department officials and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. A new security agreement planned with Israel is also on Syria's agenda. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that there has been progress in the discussions regarding this agreement.
