A very powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Chiapas, Mexico, near the Guatemala border, shaking both countries. Immediately after the tremor, a tsunami threat was declared for the coasts of Mexico and Guatemala, while the first images of the moment of the earthquake revealed the extent of the horror. The violent shaking caused buildings to sway like cradles, mountains to collapse, and the destructive force of the tremor was captured on camera moment by moment. A very powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.3 struck off the coast of Chiapas, Mexico, near the border with Guatemala, shaking both countries. Immediately after the tremor, a tsunami threat was declared for the coasts of Mexico and Guatemala, while the first images of the earthquake revealed the extent of the horror. The destructive force of the violent shaking, with buildings swaying like cradles and mountains collapsing, was captured moment by moment on camera.

HIGH BUILDINGS SWAYED LIKE CRADLES

Images showing the intensity of the earthquake capture moments when multi-story buildings in city centers swayed sharply from side to side under the impact of the tremor. During the quake, debris and plaster pieces breaking off from building facades rapidly scattered into the streets, while electric wires and signs on the roads shook violently, all reflected on cameras.

LANDSLIDES BLOCKED ROADS, MOUNTAINS COLLAPSED

In the mountainous and sloping regions hit by the earthquake, large-scale landslides occurred. Massive rock fragments breaking off from slopes due to the tremor created a huge dust cloud as they quickly rolled onto highways. Vehicles and drivers passing by at that time were seen caught in the midst of the landslides, facing great danger, with some roads completely closed to traffic due to the piles of broken earth and stones.

FELT OVER A WIDE AREA, PEOPLE POURED INTO THE STREETS

The earthquake, with its epicenter on the southern coast of Mexico's Chiapas near the Guatemala border, occurred at a point very close to the border. The tremor was intensely felt across western Guatemala and in the capital Guatemala City, prompting people to panic and evacuate their homes and offices, pouring into open areas and streets. It was reported that the tremors were also strongly felt in El Salvador and Mexico's Oaxaca state.

TSUNAMI THREAT DECLARED

Following the earthquake, a tsunami warning was issued for certain parts of the coasts of Mexico and Guatemala. Authorities stated that there was a tsunami risk for coastal stretches up to 300 kilometers (186 miles) from the epicenter, while noting that there was no threat for the US West Coast.

So far, no casualties, injuries, or major widespread damage due to the earthquake have been confirmed by official authorities. Teams continue their inspection and damage assessment work in the region.
