According to a statement from the Balıkesir Governorship, during an operation carried out by the Coast Guard North Aegean Group Command elements as part of the fight against irregular migration, a high-speed boat with a fiberglass hull carrying 1 migrant smuggling organizer and 34 irregular migrants collided with a Coast Guard vessel off the coast of Badavut in Ayvalık.
6 MIGRANTS LOST THEIR LIVES
During the search and rescue operations in the area, it was determined that 5 of the irregular migrants who fell into the sea lost their lives, while 1 person was hospitalized with serious injuries. A search and rescue operation was initiated for 1 missing irregular migrant.
In today's operations, the lifeless body of the missing migrant was found entangled in the nets of a trawler that was fishing off the coast of the Altınova neighborhood in Ayvalık. Fishermen, who noticed a young male corpse among the nets pulled onto the boat after fishing, immediately informed the Coast Guard teams about the situation.
The teams that arrived at the boat determined that the lifeless body belonged to the missing migrant. The migrant's body was taken to the morgue of Ayvalık State Hospital. Following this development, the ongoing search and rescue operations off the coast of Ayvalık were also concluded.
Meanwhile, the female migrant who was seriously injured in the same accident was transferred from Ayvalık State Hospital to Edremit. It was reported that the woman's life was still in danger.
