In the Görele district of Giresun, following the flooding of a stream after heavy rainfall, the lifeless bodies of two sisters who were swept away by the floodwaters have been reached, while search efforts continue for the mother. At the streamside where the search operations are ongoing, the moment the father, unable to hold back his tears, called out to his wife and daughters was heartbreaking. Meanwhile, the moment the floodwaters arrived was captured on mobile phone cameras.
Heavy rainfall that was effective on Sis Mountain in the Görele district of Giresun caused floods and overflows.
MOTHER AND HER DAUGHTERS WERE SWEPT AWAY BY FLOODWATERS As the water level in the Zıva Stream, located on the Giresun side of the mountain, rose rapidly after the rains, the Kırca family, who were having a picnic by the stream, were swept away by the floodwaters. First, father Mehmet Kırca was caught in the water, while his wife Zekiye Kırca (55) and their daughters Burcu and Burçin Kırca struggled to save him. During this time, father Mehmet Kırca managed to save himself with his own means, while his wife and two daughters were swept away by the floodwaters.
THE BODIES OF THE TWO SISTERS WERE FOUND In the efforts involving approximately 80 search and rescue personnel, the lifeless body of one of the sisters, Burcu Kırca, was first reached. While search efforts for Zekiye Kırca and Burçin Kırca continued from air and land, the lifeless body of Burçin Kırca was also found on Çavuşlu beach, where the Zıva stream flows into the sea, 25 km from where she fell into the stream.
THE FATHER'S CRY BROKE HEARTS Unable to hold back his tears by the stream where search efforts continued, father Mehmet Kırca called out to his wife and daughters, expressing his pain with the words, "Zekiye, you left gathering your children, leaving me alone. My daughter Burçin, I had built you a house. You used to say, 'The house is beautiful, I will stay here'."
Witnesses stated that the two sisters had come to the village from Istanbul yesterday and were swept away by the rising floodwaters while they went to the stream side to take a walk and have a picnic.
GOVERNOR KOÇ: WE HAVE MOBILIZED ALL OUR RESOURCES Giresun Governor Mustafa Koç, while examining the search efforts for the mother and daughter swept away by the floodwaters after heavy rainfall in the Görele district today, consoled the grieving father Mehmet Kırca by offering his condolences.
In his statement to the press, Governor Koç said, "Unfortunately, around 15:00 this afternoon, following a sudden and very intense rainfall on Sis Mountain Plateau in our province, our colleagues received a report that a family, which we know was having a picnic by the stream, was swept away as a result of the sudden rise of the Zıva Stream. Of course, the father, as you have also seen, was determined to have saved himself with his own means, but unfortunately, it was determined that the mother and her two daughters, her children, were swept away. And with all our resources, our gendarmerie, our JAK, our DSI, our AFAD, our health teams, and all our relevant institutions, we have mobilized all our means since that moment. All resources, both in terms of technical personnel and technical capacity of our state, from Ankara onwards, are mobilized. Even at night, our night-vision UAVs will continue to work. Our every hope, wish, prayer, and effort is to reach our citizens safely," he said.
"OUR CITIZENS SHOULD HEED THE WARNINGS MADE BY OFFICIAL AUTHORITIES" Noting that sudden and very intense rainfalls are a reality of the region, Governor Koç said, "Unfortunately, sudden and very intense rainfalls are a reality of our region. I consider it an important issue for our citizens to heed the warnings made by official authorities, to stay away from stream beds, for their own life and property safety, or to prevent this painful event we experienced from happening again. Through you, I wish that our citizens show sensitivity once again on this matter. I offer my condolences to the family. I wish our colleagues ease," he stated.
Meanwhile, search efforts continue for mother Zekiye Kırca, who was swept away by the floodwaters.
