Some defendants and their lawyers were present at the hearing held at the Istanbul 13th Heavy Penal Court. The defense lawyers representing the defendants requested their clients' acquittal during the hearing. 34 DEFENDANTS ACQUITTEDIn its ruling, the court stated that there was no evidence that could be deemed conclusive and credible beyond any reasonable doubt regarding the charges against the 34 defendants, and thus ruled for their acquittal. The panel also decided to drop the charges against defendant Hakan Tezel due to his passing in June 2024. WHAT HAPPENED?The case involving 35 defendants, including members of Beşiktaş's fan group Çarşı, related to the Gezi Park events was concluded on December 29, 2015, and the acquittal decisions made by the Istanbul 13th Heavy Penal Court were overturned by the Court of Cassation. The Court of Cassation emphasized in its overturning decision that there should be a consolidation of the Gezi Park and Çarşı cases due to the legal connection between them. The ruling stated that there was a legal and factual connection between the case regarding the Gezi Park events, which was seen at the Istanbul 30th Heavy Penal Court, and the Çarşı case, and that considering the nature of the crime of 'membership in an organization,' both cases should be consolidated. It was highlighted that the decision to acquit the defendants based on incomplete investigation was a reason for the overturning. Following the overturning decisions, the cases were consolidated on July 30 at the Istanbul 13th Heavy Penal Court, increasing the number of defendants to 52. The files of the Gezi Park and Çarşı cases were separated again during the fourth hearing held on February 21, taking into account the stage the cases had reached.
