Indian Police Make First Arrest In Anti-Muslim Hate Speeches Case

14.01.2022 00:12

Participants at 3 day religious event last month urged Muslim genocide.

Police in India's northern Himalayan state of Uttarakhand on Thursday announced the first arrest in a case related to hate speeches that called for the genocide of Muslims.

They said in a statement that Wasim Rizvi had been arrested. Rizvi, a Muslim who said he converted to Hinduism, is now known as Jitendra Narayan Tyagi.

A Hindu religious assembly was held last month in Haridwar in Uttarakhand where Muslims were openly targeted by Hindu leaders who gathered for the three-day event.

Separately, in the nation's capital New Delhi, Hindu leaders were seen attacking Muslims and taking an oath to die and to kill to make India a Hindu nation.

The arrest comes one day after the Supreme Court issued a notice to the Uttarakhand government following a petition seeking the prosecution of those involved in making hate speeches at last month's event.

Videos of the assembly that went viral on social media triggered outrage across the country, with a former military chief, rights activists and politicians demanding action.

Opposition party members also questioned the silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue.

Police initially named Rizvi in the case but later added more names in the First Information Report -- a document prepared by police when they receive information about the commission of an offense. -
