Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that US President Donald Trump's visit to China will not affect Tehran-Beijing relations. Iran described its ties with China as a "strong, strategic, and independent partnership," highlighting the 25-year cooperation agreement signed in 2020. While the Iran issue is expected to be on the agenda during the Trump-Xi Jinping meeting, Beijing's influence over Tehran is seen as one of the critical topics.
The spokesperson for Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that US President Donald Trump's visit to Beijing will not affect Iran-China relations. The Iranian official emphasized that relations between Tehran and Beijing are "very strong, strategic, and independent," arguing that the partnership between the two countries cannot be weakened by external pressures.
Speaking at a press conference, the spokesperson expressed that Trump's engagements with China are a bilateral matter between the two countries, while the US cannot influence the long-term strategic cooperation between Iran and China. The Iranian official stressed that close cooperation with China continues, particularly in the fields of energy, economy, politics, and regional security.
EMPHASIS ON THE 25-YEAR STRATEGIC AGREEMENT
The Iranian administration has brought back to the forefront the 25-year comprehensive cooperation agreement signed with China in 2020. This agreement covers energy, infrastructure investments, technology, banking, defense, culture, and regional collaborations in the Middle East. While Iranian media interpret this agreement as an "economic lifeline against Western sanctions," it is noted that China's influence on Iran's economy has increased further in recent years.
China continues to be one of the largest buyers of Iranian oil, and it is stated that energy trade between the two countries persists despite US sanctions. Analyses in the foreign press suggest that the Beijing administration views its relations with Iran not only as an economic matter but also as a strategic balancing element.
IRAN ON THE AGENDA OF THE TRUMP-XI SUMMIT
According to reports in the international press, the Iran dossier is expected to be one of the key topics during the critical meetings between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. It is noted that the Washington administration may ask China to use its influence over Iran to pressure Tehran into a new agreement. Particularly after the Iran war, China's stance is seen as critical due to the impact of tensions in the Strait of Hormuz on energy markets.
Assessments in the US press indicate that the Trump administration wants China to reduce its oil purchases from Iran, which is one of the most sensitive topics in the talks. It is also stated that China does not want to completely oppose Iran and aims to maintain a policy of balance in the region.
“CHINA IS A STRATEGIC POWER FOR IRAN”
In comments from Iranian media, it is emphasized that China's continuation of relations with Tehran despite US pressure holds strategic importance for Iran. Experts point out that China plays a critical role for Iran, which is under economic pressure due to Western sanctions, in the areas of investment, energy, and trade. Meanwhile, Trump's visit to Beijing is described in the world press as a "high-risk summit." The discussions are expected to cover many topics including trade wars, Taiwan, artificial intelligence competition, rare earth elements, and the Iran war.
