Rose harvest continues in Isparta, which meets approximately 65 percent of the world's rose oil production. Roses picked in the early morning hours are processed the same day and turned into high value-added products. While 1 kilogram of rose oil obtained from an average of 4 tons of roses sells for about 12,000 euros (650,000 Turkish liras), this year a harvest of 13,000 tons is expected in the city. Producers, however, are demanding an increase in the base price due to rising costs.

The harvest season continues in Isparta, shown as one of the world's highest quality oil rose production centers. The roses harvested during the collection shift that starts with the first light of morning are delivered to factories on the same day and processed.

Being a very delicate product, oil roses are processed without delay, and depending on weather conditions, only 1 kilogram of rose oil is obtained from an average of 3 to 4 tons of rose flowers.

PRODUCERS SATISFIED WITH YIELD

Mükerrem Çetin Kaya, who produces in Kuleönü Town, stated that the yield is high this year due to abundant rainfall. Kaya expressed that the harvest begins at 05:00 AM and is completed by noon.

Kaya, who said he has been growing roses for about 40 years, explained that rose oil is used in the cosmetics industry as well as in products like jam and Turkish delight.

RECOLLECTION EXPECTATION 13 THOUSAND TONS

Müstahattin Can Selçuk, President of Isparta Chamber of Agriculture, stated that the rose season in the city begins every year in May and continues until the end of June.

Reminding that the frost event last year negatively affected production, Selçuk announced that they expect a recollection of approximately 13 thousand tons this year.

BASE PRICE DEBATE

Stating that production costs have increased, Selçuk argued that the base price of 80 lira announced for roses this year is insufficient. Selçuk expressed that producers' expectation is a base price of 130 lira per kilogram.

1 KILO ROSE OIL 12 THOUSAND EUROS

Emphasizing that climate conditions are decisive in the production of rose oil, Selçuk said that under normal conditions, 1 kilogram of rose oil is obtained from about 4 tons of roses.

Stating that the price per kilogram of rose oil is around 12 thousand euros (650 thousand TL) this year, Selçuk noted that the rose, processed into perfume and cosmetic products, creates much higher economic value.

GOAL TO INCREASE ADDED VALUE

Expressing that roses should not be sold only as raw material, Selçuk said that if local brands are strengthened with future factories and R&D centers, Isparta can earn more income from the rose economy.
