The endemic "Peşmen Navruzu" plant, which grows only in Malatya worldwide and is critically endangered, was spotted in the Yeşilyurt district. A fine of 699,245 TL is imposed on those who pick this protected plant.
EMERGED AT HIGH ALTITUDE
Peşmen Navruzu, which was placed under protection in 2016 under the National Biological Diversity Inventory and Monitoring Project carried out by the General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks, was spotted in the Yeşilyurt district at an altitude of approximately 1,400 meters. The flowers blooming in the area, which had patches of snow cover, drew attention. Hüseyin Gülfırat, who noticed the plant during a nature walk, said he later learned that the species he saw was Peşmen Navruzu.
CRITICALLY ENDANGERED SPECIES
Officials from the Malatya Nature Conservation and National Parks Branch Directorate stated that Peşmen Navruzu is a locally endemic species unique to Malatya and is critically endangered. Officials noted that the plant usually blooms in April, but this year it emerged later due to weather conditions.
FINE OF 699 THOUSAND TL FOR PICKING
An administrative fine of 699,245 TL is applied under Law No. 2872 on Environmental Law for unauthorized picking of the protected species or for subjecting it to biopiracy activities.
"I SAW IT BY CHANCE"
Hüseyin Gülfırat, who photographed the plant, said, "I was going to high-altitude areas to see snow. I learned by chance that this plant I saw is Peşmen Navruzu. It is endemic and a species that is forbidden to pick."
