After the heavy snowfall in Artvin, the snow depth in the city center exceeded 1 meter, while in the villages it reached 2-3 meters, and in the higher areas, it surpassed 5-6 meters. In the province where snow captivity is experienced, schools have also been closed for 7 days.
Snowfall is affecting many cities, especially in Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia. The snowfall, which has been effective in the general area of Artvin for about a week, has negatively impacted life, especially transportation and education.
THIS HASN'T BEEN SEEN SINCE 1997
According to information obtained from the Artvin Meteorology Directorate, the snow depth measured in the city was 44 centimeters on February 26 and reached 104 centimeters on February 27. According to the data, the highest snow depth in the city was measured at 132 centimeters in February 1997. Governor Turan Ergün, who inspected the snow removal efforts in the village of Tütüncüler, stated that they are experiencing the harshest winter in the last quarter-century in the city.
THERE ARE PLACES WHERE SNOW DEPTH EXCEEDS 5-6 METERS
Ergün noted that the snow depth in the city center has not been measured this high since 1997, stating, "As of today, the snow measured in the center is 104 centimeters. This is the highest snowfall since 1997. Also, the fresh snow that fell in the center in 20 hours yesterday was 64 centimeters. The snow depth in the city center exceeds 1 meter, while in the villages it exceeds 2-3 meters, and in higher areas, it exceeds 5-6 meters."
SCHOOLS HAVE BEEN CLOSED FOR A WEEK
Due to heavy snowfall, schools across the province have been closed for 7 days. It is expected that education will resume next Monday, provided that weather conditions are favorable.
