In New York, USA, 71 female students from a Jewish school got lost after entering underground drainage tunnels during a trip. After advancing about 800 meters, they lost their way; they were found when a police officer noticed them emerging from a manhole. Two students sustained minor injuries in the incident.
71 female students attending the Toras Emachu Jewish school in Monsey, New York, a predominantly Orthodox Jewish area, went missing on Wednesday during a trip to Memorial Park in the town of Nyack along the Hudson River.
THEY ENTERED A DRAINAGE TUNNEL
It was reported that the 71 students, following a stream bed during the school trip, entered a large drainage tunnel collecting rainwater in the area and became lost in the underground tunnels.
POLICE FOUND THEM BY CHANCE
The large group of female students was discovered thanks to a police officer patrolling Memorial Park, who noticed young girls emerging from a manhole in the town of Nyack.
THEY PROCEEDED 800 METERS IN THE TUNNEL
Most of the young girls, said to have set out to explore the underground tunnels, were found near the intersection of Main Street and Franklin Street. Police confirmed that the entire group was safely located.
According to reports in the US media, the young girls advanced about 800 meters through the underground tunnels after the drainage tunnel, and despite losing their way and getting lost, they managed to find an exit on their own.
TWO STUDENTS SLIGHTLY INJURED
Two students were slightly injured in the incident. One student was treated at the scene, while the other was taken to the hospital with complaints of abdominal pain.
Police are requesting information from anyone with knowledge of the incident.
