A fire broke out the other day in a factory located in the Afyonkarahisar Organized Industrial Zone (OSB), which produces forest products.
GREW RAPIDLY The fire in the facility, which contained many products made of wood and chipboard, grew rapidly. The flames engulfed the entire factory.
TEAMS INTERVENED The first responders to the rapidly growing fire were the fire crews affiliated with the Afyonkarahisar Municipality. Additionally, fire trucks dispatched to the scene, water tankers belonging to the Forest Management Directorate, vehicles for public order intervention from the Police Department, and vehicles and personnel from AFAD also supported the firefighting efforts.
THE EXTENT OF THE FIRE WAS REVEALED WHEN THE DAYLIGHT CAME When daylight broke, the extent of the fire was revealed. Air support was requested to reach the inner areas of the fire. In the afternoon, two helicopters also supported the firefighting efforts from the air.
EXTINGUISHED AFTER 20 HOURS The wooden materials trapped under the metal items in the warehouse, which collapsed, caused the fire to last a long time. Due to the excess flammable materials in the warehouse, teams worked hard to control the flames before they spread. The fire was brought under control and extinguished after nearly 20 hours of efforts by the teams.
"OUR COMFORT IS THAT THERE WERE NO CASUALTIES OR INJURIES" Afyonkarahisar Governor Kübra Güran Yiğitbaşı, who arrived at the factory area where the fire broke out, conducted inspections in the region. In her statement here, Yiğitbaşı said: "There is no clear information about the cause of the fire. Our priority is to bring the fire under control and remove the burned materials from here. We can say that all products in the factory have burned. Thank God the company had insurance. Having insurance will provide some relief to the business owner. Our comfort is that there were no casualties or injuries, but we wish there had not been such material loss. However, the rapid intervention to extinguish the fire before it spread to other areas is another comforting point."
Governor Kübra Güran Yiğitbaşı "OUR FIRE BRIGADE WORKED TIRELESSLY" Afyonkarahisar Mayor Burcu Köksal, who went to the fire area, also stated, "From the moment we first learned about the incident, our fire brigade intervened. We are also personally monitoring the situation on-site. There are many businesses and factories around. Therefore, our fire brigade is working tirelessly to prevent the fire from spreading to another business or factory."
Mayor Burcu Köksal THE ABSENCE OF A FIRE BRIGADE IN THE OSB DREW REACTIONS On the other hand, eyes turned to the Organized Industrial Zone after the fire. The area, which houses approximately 400 companies, also includes two technical high schools and a higher education student dormitory. The absence of a fire brigade in such a risky area has caused reactions from the citizens. According to citizens' claims, it was also alleged that the fire hydrants within the OSB were not functioning properly. It was claimed that the lack of a fire brigade, which should be present in the OSB, delayed the intervention to the fire and increased its intensity.
