Production of handcrafted prayer rugs continues in Şırnak. Women have been making a living by producing prayer rugs for years. The rugs, made with threads from sheep wool and embroidered over days of labor, are sold for 20 thousand lira each.
1 MONTH OF LABOR
In the Akçayol village of the Beytüşşebap district, women have been producing prayer rugs for years. The rugs, prepared for brides' trousseaus, are made both for sale and for use in dowries. Each rug, taking one month to complete, sells for 20 thousand lira.
"VERY CHALLENGING BUT I'M USED TO IT"
Producer Azime Varol stated that they have been doing this work for years and that she is making a prayer rug for her daughter's trousseau. Varol said, "I've been working on this for days. It's very challenging, but since I'm used to it, I've been doing this for years. The ones I make for my daughter sell for 20 thousand lira each. They are made from sheep wool. We used to do it on the plateau in the old days."
