Eight valuable jewels were stolen in a robbery that occurred in the morning at the Louvre Museum in Paris. The thieves took advantage of security lapses to enter the museum and managed to escape.
The thieves who robbed the Louvre Museum in Paris in broad daylight managed to escape with eight very valuable jewels. The robbery took place between 09:30 and 09:40 Paris time on Sunday morning, just minutes after the museum opened to visitors.
ROBBERY WITH A MECHANICAL ELEVATOR
Four thieves used a mechanical elevator attached to a vehicle to reach a balcony near the Seine River and entered the Apollo Gallery, where the royal jewels are located.
Photos taken at the scene showed a ladder loaded onto the vehicle at a first-floor window. Later, two of the thieves entered the museum by cutting the glass with a wireless cutter.
"JEWELS ARE INVALUABLE"
The French Ministry of Culture stated that the jewels are "invaluable" in terms of their cultural heritage value. Vincent Meylan, an expert in historical jewels, points out that it would be impossible to resell such cataloged jewels in their current condition.
WHAT WAS STOLEN?
According to French authorities, eight pieces of jewelry were stolen. They dropped a crown with two thousand diamonds while escaping.
Most of the valuable items of royal origin were lost or sold after the 1789 French Revolution. The works that were salvaged and sometimes repurchased to bring back to the country are still on display. Most of the jewels targeted in this incident date back to the 19th century and belonged to Napoleon and his nephew, Napoleon III.
