Journalist Nuray Başaran Demir, indicating that she was targeted by the projection of her voice and image at the rally in İzmir, filed a criminal complaint against CHP Chairman Özgür Özel.
Demir, who submitted a complaint petition to the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, noted that she has been receiving threats for a long time due to her journalistic activities and stated that the fire that broke out in her residential complex on April 25 was related to these threats.
"ÖZEL TARGETED US AT THE MAY 19 RALLY"
Demir, stating that she was not at home when the fire broke out, said, "Coincidentally, my daughter stops by that day, and we are faced with a fire that appears to have originated from an electrical fault on the side wall of our house. We were actually in the process of investigating that. At this point, while we were dealing with these issues, Mr. Özgür Özel, the Chairman of the Republican People's Party, targeted us again at the May 19 rally along with some journalists. By broadcasting our images and voices, he declared us to all of Turkey as if to say, 'These people are lying.'
"EVEN IF HE DOESN'T MENTION MY NAME, IT WAS CLEAR I WAS THE TARGET"
Demir stated that the news regarding the distribution of 1,200 phones to the delegates of the Republican People's Party was made by her, saying, "In the file related to the investigation by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, the documents and invoices were included in four separate copies. After bringing this to light, Özgür Özel had actually mentioned this in three or four rallies without naming me until today. I am the only journalist who has been following this news and the convention lawsuits from the beginning, so even if he doesn't mention my name, it was clear who did it and that I was the target."
"AN INVESTIGATION WAS INITIATED EX OFFICIO"
Finally, Demir, who stated that she was targeted again at the CHP's May 19 rally, expressed the following:
"At the end of the day, we are also performing a public duty according to Law No. 212. You all know that. Our duty is to enlighten and inform the public regarding their freedom to receive news. I see this as a public service. Now that we are being targeted with our names and statements, and the public is being led to believe, 'Look, these people are lying, take action,' when these are included in the rally, I had actually addressed him last night and made a speech based on what I have experienced and what the consequences of doing politics in this way could be.
After that, during the day, I met with my lawyer and prepared our petition to file a criminal complaint. But this morning, I was called by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office and was informed that an investigation was initiated ex officio and a prosecutor was assigned. My prosecutor invited me today. I came and presented the evidence of what I have experienced so far to the prosecutor. Regarding the investigation that started ex officio, I requested an investigation into how my house burned down and who was responsible for it. I also filed a complaint against CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, who targeted me."
KILIÇDAROĞLU DENIED THE ALLEGATIONS
Demir also denied the allegations that she was consulting for former CHP Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, stating, "I have no consulting relationship with Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu today, tomorrow, or any time. I have never provided any consulting services."
Demir addressed Özel, saying, "I am calling out to Özgür Özel again from here. I am not afraid. I am one of those journalists who live with their lives on the line. They are likely doing this to prevent me from speaking about these issues, the convention, or the İBB investigation, but I have never been afraid of anyone, and I will not be. As I said last night on air, I would rather become a martyr for the press. This would be the most important legacy I could leave to my child and family. I would be proud of that. But I also call on Özgür Özel to act in a manner befitting the responsibility of that chair as the leader of the main opposition party, as a journalist who has been in this profession for 37 years."
"CAMERAS FACING OUR STREET HAVE ALSO BEEN DISABLED"
Demir, stating that they informed the security units after the fire, said, "Investigation teams came and conducted a site examination. However, we later saw that the cameras facing our street had also been disabled. In fact, they were broken or disappeared. All of this, of course, led us to suspect and investigate the incident. We were actually conducting this quietly. Even though Mr. Özgür was making unlawful accusations and targeting me by saying things like 'Where are the 1,200 phones, where are the invoices?' without naming me, we were actually waiting in silence for the investigation to conclude. But when he named me and published my image, making me a target again, we felt the need to explain, thinking that perhaps Mr. Özgür was unaware of these matters."
"THEY ARE SAYING THAT SOME OPERATIONS WILL BE CARRIED OUT AGAINST ME FROM WITHIN THE CHP"
Adding that an ex officio investigation was initiated by the prosecutor's office, Demir said, "If there is a price to pay, we are ready to pay it. I am just saying this. I said it in the evening program as well. There are still those who threaten me. They are saying that some operations will be carried out against me from within the Republican People's Party, both through trolls and directly. I am shouting out from here again. Little by little, it goes. A lot goes a lot. Today, I am alone. I am lonely, but if they have someone they will assign regarding me, let them come prepared to face death. This is a call to Özgür Özel," she said.
