Istanbul was locked down for world-famous star Kanye West's historic concert that will go down in rap history. Exactly 120,000 tickets were sold for the show at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium, and tens of thousands of fans pouring onto the streets at the same time left no room to step in the metro, causing moments of panic. The concert congestion, combined with post-holiday traffic, brought the city's main arteries to a standstill, while in front of the licensed stands set up in the area, massive queues stretching 2.5 kilometers formed for 1,000 TL socks.
Life in the mega-city came to a complete standstill ahead of world-renowned rapper Kanye West's massive concert in Istanbul. With approximately 120,000 tickets sold for the historic concert set to start at 9:00 PM at Atatürk Olympic Stadium, tens of thousands of fans flooding the streets simultaneously caused a massive crush on public transport and along the stadium route. This giant event, poised to become one of the highest-attended concerts in rap music history if realized, combined with the city's holiday return traffic, completely gridlocked Istanbul's main arteries.
CRUSH ON THE METROS
Thousands of local and foreign fans who chose public transport, especially the metro, to reach Atatürk Olympic Stadium, where 120,000 people flocked, caused massive congestion at stations. At the metro transfer points connecting to the Olympic Stadium line and in the carriages, there was literally no room to move. Images reflected on social media showed queues of people stretching for meters from station turnstiles to platforms and crush moments inside the carriages.
A 2.5-KILOMETER SOCK QUEUE FOR LICENSED MERCHANDISE!
The biggest frenzy at the concert area, however, occurred in front of the stalls selling Kanye West's licensed merchandise. Fans wanting to buy the famous rapper's licensed products, on sale for the first time in Turkey, formed a massive 2.5-kilometer-long queue around the stadium. It was notable that even the most affordable product sold at the stalls, Kanye West-branded socks, found buyers at 1,000 TL. Despite the high prices, young people waited in line for hours to buy licensed socks and clothing.
HOLIDAY RETURN AND CONCERT DENSITY GRIDLOCKED ISTANBUL
The Kanye West frenzy hit not only public transport but also Istanbul's traffic. With tens of thousands of vehicles heading toward the stadium adding to the heavy holiday return traffic on intercity roads, traffic came to a complete halt, especially on the TEM Highway and stadium connecting roads. Due to vehicle queues stretching for kilometers, both drivers and music lovers trying to make it to the concert experienced difficult moments.
"I BOUGHT A TICKET FOR 7,200 LIRA, WE'RE WAITING WITH GREAT EXCITEMENT"
Despite all the transportation ordeal and product queues stretching for kilometers, the enthusiasm of fans who turned the stadium front into a festival area from early morning was a sight to behold. Tuna Yalçın, who came from Izmir with his brother Rüzgar for the concert, said, "We bought our tickets 3 months ago, on the first day it was announced. The area is incredibly crowded, and people from all nations have flocked here. The atmosphere is great; we're eagerly waiting for Kanye West."
Another citizen waiting in the area, Yiğit Taşdemir, commented on ticket prices, saying, "It's a great day. We love Kanye very much. I bought a ticket for 7,200 lira. Right now, all of us Turkish youths are here, and we're focused on the clock with great excitement." Leyna Nil Göktan, who came with her friend, stated that they got in line hours before the gates opened, adding that the size of the area increased their excitement.
ALSO SWARMED BY TOURISTS
Kanye West's Istanbul concert, expected to go down in rap history, saw intense participation not only from within Turkey but also from abroad. Erol Devrik, noting that the concert greatly contributed to Istanbul's tourism, summarized the global atmosphere in front of the stadium: "Kanye West is a singer who travels all over the world, and it's very proud that he came to Istanbul. Many foreign tourists have also come to Istanbul just for this concert. We all listen to him with pleasure, so a very enjoyable evening awaits us."
While historic queues continued in front of the stadium hours before the gates opened, security and municipality teams ramped up their measures to resolve disruptions in transportation.
EUROPEAN CONCERTS CANCELLED
Kanye West's concerts in European countries, however, were cancelled one after another due to the famous rapper's past antisemitic statements.
Following the British government's ban on his entry into the country and the cancellation of this year's Wireless Festival, West's Orange Velodrome Marseille concert was also postponed in France. After England and France, both Poland and Switzerland also cancelled his concerts.
Speaking after the cancellation decisions, West said in a post on X, "I know it takes time to understand the sincerity of my determination to make amends for my mistakes. I take full responsibility, but I don't want to leave my fans in the middle of this process. They mean everything to me. I look forward to the next concerts. See you at the top of the world."
