In the Menemen district of İzmir, 62-year-old lawyer Özge Penbegül, who was shot dead with a handgun by police officer Aykut Erol, to whom she got engaged on October 3, was buried amid tears. Menemen District Governor Vedat Yılmaz and İzmir Bar Association President Serhat Sökmen also attended the funeral of Penbegül, whose colleagues draped a robe over her coffin. Erol, who attempted suicide after shooting Penbegül, also died in the hospital where he was taken.
A funeral ceremony was held for young lawyer Özge Penbegül, who lost her life in an armed attack by her fiancé in Menemen. The grieving family had difficulty standing during the ceremony.
THEY HAD BECOME ENGAGED ON OCTOBER 3
In the Tülbentli neighborhood of Menemen district yesterday morning, an argument broke out at home for a reason not yet known between lawyer Özge Penbegül, whose parents were on vacation, and police officer Aykut Erol, to whom she got engaged on October 3. As the argument escalated, Erol fired at Penbegül with the handgun he had with him, then attempted suicide with the same weapon.
THEY COULD NOT BE SAVED
Following reports from neighbors who heard the gunshots, medical, police, and fire crews were dispatched to the address. Under the examination of medical teams, it was determined that Penbegül had lost her life. Erol, who was learned to have been serving in Hakkari, could not be saved despite interventions at İzmir City Hospital, where he was taken by ambulance.
COLLEAGUES DRAPED A ROBE OVER HER COFFIN
The funeral prayer was performed for Özge Penbegül at Hacıkerimoğlu Buhara Mosque in Mermerli Neighborhood. Menemen District Governor Vedat Yılmaz, Menemen Chief Public Prosecutor Soner Erden, Menemen District Police Chief Gürcan Alev, İzmir Bar Association President Serhat Sökmen, lawyers, and Penbegül’s family and relatives attended the funeral. A robe was draped over Penbegül’s coffin by her colleagues.
HER MOTHER WATCHED THE CEREMONY FROM AN AMBULANCE
At the funeral ceremony, father Ozan Penbegül, a retired police officer, and other relatives had difficulty standing. Mother Özlem Penbegül followed the funeral ceremony from an ambulance in front of the mosque. Özge Penbegül’s body was buried in Menemen Cemetery after the noon prayer.
